Chambers lifts 'Sportsman' honour

Congratulations to Leicester City footballer Ashley Chambers, voted Young Sportsman of the Year in the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards for 2005.

Chambers received his highly prestigious award at a De Montfort Hall ceremony which was packed with people who have flown the sporting flag with distinction for Leicester and Leicestershire in local, national and international circles over the year.

Chambers made history when, on September 20, 2005, and aged 15 years and 203 days, he became the youngest player ever to appear in Leicester City's first team.

Although he was on the field little more than momentarily, City achieved a rare win during this miserable season, beating Blackpool at home in the second round of the Carling Cup.

Chambers also represented England Under 17's in the Nordic (summer) Tournament scoring a hat-trick on his first appearance against the Faroe Islands.

Voted Young Sportswoman of the Year was Leicester City Girls Centre of Excellence under 16 footballer Remi Allen.
