Former player and current youth coach Matt Piper has urged our youngsters not to become complacent following involvement with the first team last season.
Speaking to the Leicester Mercury Piper talked about the emergence of Liam Moore, Tom Hopper, Jeff Schlupp and Harry Panayiotou and leant on his own experience when he progressed through the Academy as he advised the players that the hard work begins now, and that it's not the time to think they have made it.
'If I'm honest, I probably got a little complacent when I broke through. What I would say is when you get into the first team you don't want to get complacent, you still have a long way to go. I would say to them don't just think you are there with the senior pros. There's a difference. They know their routine and what works for them, that may not be enough for the young players, they have to keep working hard and practice more. If you're a winger practice your crossing, a striker practice your shooting and grab anyone you can to work with you. The young players coming through are very exciting, but they need to retain that hunger.'
We've all seen highly rated youngsters tail off completely having made their breakthrough, so the youngsters should definitely heed his words and keep practicing hard instead of thinking they have made it. With the structure at the club it should keep them in check and we should see a lot more of them in the future.
