Wellens Happy With Tactics

Richie Wellens has said he has welcomed the change in formation and tactics since Sven left, as he thinks it allows us a greater shot in games.

Wellens thinks the diamond formation under Sven in some cases held us back, so with the caretaker team being more willing to change our setup to suit the opponent or how a game is going, he believes gives us an extra shot in games that aren't going our way.

Speaking to the Leicester Mercury Wellens said.

'We just need to get that bit of consistency in the team selection and the way we play and then we can really push on. The second half performance at West Ham was the best we have played all season by a mile, and against a team at the top of their game, but we showed we have a system which works and means we can get at teams.'

Wellens adds that he thinks a 442/433 option suits the players better and gives us more going forward.

'There has been a lot said about the diamond. At times it doesn't give you a lot of options. You don't play the long ball and the play doesn't get spread. With a 442 and as we did at Burnley too, we can match teams, and then it's a case of winning the battles to get the rewards.'

It's a valid point, and whilst there are few drawbacks to learning a rigid system inside out and keeping to it's strengths, there is also a lot to be said about being capable of switching systems to suit how a game is going and either close up weaknesses or give yourself more options on the attack.
