Schmeichel - I Didn't Know I'd Been Booked

Kasper Schmeichel has insisted today that he was unaware that he had been previously booked by the referee prior to his sending off.

Speaking to lcfc.com our goalie said.

'If I knew I had a booking, what I did would have been pure stupidity. I was trying to take the momentum away from then, but I would never in my life have done that if I had known I had been booked the first time.'

Schmeichel goes onto say (seemingly backed up by the highlights reel) that he had his back to the referee when the card was brandished but surely a referee is required to inform and make clear to a player, the crowd, the 4th official and everybody else that a caution has been given for it to stand.

Surely that's just sensible. Referee's make a point of calling players to them to 'flash' the card at them. If that's not in the rulebook these days are they posturing for camera attention then?

Sven rightly wouldn't defend him over it or find excuses, and Schmeichel himself ends by saying.

'I apologise sincerely to everyone because I'm speechless about what's happened.'

But whilst it might be gamesmanship, idiotic, it matters not - I thought the referee's association insisted on a rulebook so each game could be judged fairly. I saw 3 keepers on the Football League Show do effectively the same after conceeding but they didn't get booked.

Then again they didn't have a referee in charge who seemingly can't tell the difference between hand ball or ball to hand either, so maybe that explains it.
