Wellens set to sign new contract

Leicester midfielder Richie Wellens looks set to put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year contract, according to Sky Sports.

The play-maker has been an ever-present for the Foxes this season, excelling under Sven-Goran Eriksson in the team's push for the play-offs.

Wellens attracted the reported attentions of Premier League outfits in the January transfer window from the likes of Birmingham, but now looks set to commit his Foxes future.

The 30-year-old will follow in the steps of Paul Gallagher, who earlier in the week penned his own four-year deal at the club.

Leicester offered contracts to three key players in the last week, and are now waiting on star man Andy King to complete the trio.

Wellens earlier today insisted that the Foxes still have as much a chance as anybody of securing a play-off spot before the season is over.

'We are still there and we still have a chance,' he told the Leicester Mercury.

'The good thing is we have gone on a good run before, winning seven out of eight. I know it is easier said then done, but we need to now go out and win seven out of eight again. That will put us back in the picture.

'But you can look too far ahead sometimes and we have an international break coming up on March 26. We have to get back-to-back wins.

'Instead of seven points behind, if we are four or five with eight games to go, it looks a bit more optimistic.'
