Berner set for exit door in January

Leicester left back Bruno Berner has requested a transfer from the club in January, according to the Leicester Mercury.

Berner has been out of favour for much of the season following the arrival of Manchester City left back Greg Cunningham, and is set to head for the exit in January in search of first team football.

The Swiss full-back was an ever-present for the Foxes last season under Nigel Pearson, standing out as one of City's best performers in their successful play-off campaign.

But with the club set to extend Cunningham's loan, Berner has resigned himself to a regretful departure.

A source close to Berner told the Mercury: "He still has the desire and ambition to achieve something before the end of his career.

"Bruno is so grateful to City for two great years but he realises now that Eriksson wants to shape the team in a different way and he understands that is the business of football.

"He has had a great time at City, it has been a fantastic chapter in his career but he is looking ahead now and feels his future is away from the Walkers Stadium. He wants to stay in English football."

Interest in Berner will certainly not be lacking after his fine performances last season.

The source also revealed that Berner was grateful to the City fans who have shown him support throughout his Walkers career.

"The fans have been great to him because they appreciate his commitment to the club," they added.

"Bruno has appreciated that and he hopes the fans understand his reasons for wanting to leave."
