Vassell: I can lead the line

Darius Vassell has told manager Sven-Goran Eriksson he is the man to spearhead the Leicester attack.

Vassell grabbed his first goal in a City shirt in the 5-1 victory over Doncaster on Saturday after switching into the centre of Eriksson's forward three.

"I got excited when they changed it around because I have always liked playing down the middle," he told the Leicester Mercury.

"I get more opportunities than when I play on the wing. That proved the case here. I missed one in the first half but then I took one in the second half. I can take a bit of confidence from that, but I don't know what the manager will do now in the next game.

"I feel good but obviously it is a great result for the team. I broke the duck for myself and I will celebrate that in my own way.

"But to get such a good result against such a good team is great for the club."

The former England international has so far played all of his matches on the wing under Eriksson, but has insisted the central role is his best position on the pitch.

Vassell also admitted his match fitness is improving with every game, despite not yet completing 90 minutes for the Foxes.

"I keep counting the minutes that I am getting on the pitch and the time I come off in every match is getting later and later," he said.

"I was tired after 75-80 minutes but I felt I put the work in as well. More importantly, we have the strength on the bench to bring players on that can make a difference."
