Waggy to Stay

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has given the green light for Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson to extend the loan of striker Martyn Waghorn.

It had been reported earlier in the week that Bruce may recall the youngster from his loan spell at the Walkers to provide competition for Darren Bent and Kenwyne Jones back at Sunderland.

But the Sunderland manager has indicated that he has no intentions of doing such a thing whilst the 19-year-old continues to thrive at Leicester.

Bruce told the Leicester Mercury: "I can recall him at any time because he's under this youth loan, so he's under a certain age and I can bring him back".

"I've got no intention of doing that just yet. Obviously, if something happened to Jones or Bent then I would do, but it's vital for his education that he stays there and plays in the Championship."

Waghorn scored his fifth goal of the season for City in Saturday's dismal defeat at Nottingham Forest. The striker has impressed since joining the club on loan from the Black Cats in the summer, forcing his way into a first team place.

The news will be welcomed by manager Nigel Pearson, as he aims to keep his side on track for an ambitious promotion to the Premier League.
