Chesterfield 0-1 Leicester City
Well thank the lord for Dany N'Guessan. Had it not been for his cool finish five minutes from time, this report would have looked very glum indeed.
Let's make no bones about it here, it really wasn't good. Standing on Chesterfield's open away terrace in the rain whilst watching your side struggle to break down lower league opposition sort of makes you wonder why you bothered in the first place.
The Leicester performance was unglamorous to say the least, aside from a few neat passing moves which occassionally brightened up the evening. But unfortunately, they were few and far between. The ball would often travel from the back four (mostly from the 'elegant' left wand of Wayne Brown) straight to the opposition goalkeeper with little fuss created.
Oh, and please somebody tell our forwards how the offside rule works...
Anyway, to break all this doom and gloom, there can be positives taken from it. We won the match for starters, something that didn't look like occuring during the first 85 minutes. Secondly, whilst Fryatt is injured we need somebody to fill his boots, a role N'Guessan has so far been fairly successful in, scoring twice in as many games.
In a game of little excitement, we did manage to force at least four notable attempts on goal. Veteran goalkeeper Mark Crossley had to be at his best to firstly deny Dickov in the opening 10 minutes, before later getting strong hands to Max Gradel's fierce free-kick on the edge of the area in the first half.
With just under ten minutes remaining the Foxes should have taken the lead through Dyer after the winger had found his way through the Chesterfield defence, but the shot was placed criminally wide.
However, it was Dyer's neat through ball moments later that found its way to N'Guessan, who burst through the Chesterfield defence before finishing tidily past Crossley, showing Dyer how it's supposed to be done.
The win takes Leicester into their final first team friendly of the summer where they will play Spanish La Liga side Real Valladolid at the Walkers Stadium on Sunday.
