Wellens Deal Nearing?
Leicester manager Nigel Pearson could be closer to securing the services of Doncaster Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens, after Rovers' director of football Mickey Walker began preparations to replace the former-Manchester United player.
'There's one bid especially that's in there and Sean's (O'Driscoll) done that with the chairman and we've shown an interest in the boy Kilkenny at Leeds, a good footballer. This is a 'just-in-case' scenario because if Richie Wellens goes we need to bring someone in of that ilk or better and if we bring that boy in or somebody like that it will enhance the team'.
It is understood that the Foxes had a bid turned down for the midfielder around a month ago, but they are set to return with a fresh approach, thought to be worth around £1.5-2m.
It would probably be a deal that neither Doncaster or Wellens could turn down. The player is now 29, and could be looking for one last pay-day, whilst Doncaster, although reluctant, may be satisfied with receiving that kind of money for a player approaching 30.
Wellens was an integral part of Doncaster's Championship success last season, making an impressive total of 39 league starts.
